Helping Others (Social Ministry)

God calls us to serve others in need as a faithful response to what Christ has done for us. At First Lutheran, there are many ways to help God’s children locally, nationally and internationally!

† Daily Bread is an ecumenical effort by Stoughton churches to prepare and serve a meal on the last Sunday of the month at 4:30 pm for Stoughton residents. First Lutheran is the host site for the meal. For more information, call the church office at 873-7761.

† ELCA World Hunger Appeal provides financial resources to help the hungry of the world. (FLC members make donations through their blue offering envelopes.) The congregation focuses periodically on one country or area of the world that is in special need of hunger related gifts like Haiti or the African continent. Did you know that the ELCA World Hunger Appeal is one of the highest rated non-profit food agencies in the world?

† FLC Quilters meet on the first Monday of the week from January - April to make quilts and lap lobes. 180 quilted items were provided to local and global agencies. For more information, please call Lou Ann Ellingson at 873-8816.

† Christmas Giving Tree is an opportunity for donors to give gloves, mittens, scarves, jackets, etc. for needy families in the county. Donations are made at the church and distributed to regional social service agencies.

† Good Samaritan Fund provides assistance to travelers (not residents) going through Stoughton that have special needs. Vouchers can be given to recipients to purchase gas, food and lodging that is needed on an emergency basis. Almost all of the churches have such vouchers available.

† Habitat for Humanity organizes work crews and raises funds to build homes for people with low incomes. FLC members have joined workers from around the area to construct homes right here in Stoughton! † Host a Family Holiday Gift Program Please talk with Pastor Sara at 873-7761.

† Lutheran World Relief is sponsored by several Lutheran synods. While the organization provides all kinds of assistance to the needy around the world, FLC has especially participated in Lutheran World Relief ’s clothing drive that is held in October. The church often sends over 100 boxes of clothes overseas!

† Relay For Life Walk raises money for research to find a cure for cancer. FLC often participates in this relay that usually place on the last weekend of June.

† Stoughton Food Pantry offers low-income families from the Stoughton area an opportunity to receive free food. Donations of non-perishable goods can be dropped off at the church any time in the food pantry receptacles. The telephone number of the pantry is 873-8103

† START - Stoughton Area Resource Team is an ecumenical organization that is supported by local churches and other secular groups. Residents who have difficulty paying rent, utility bills or other obligations are welcome to call 608-577-5650. Offices are located at the United Methodist Church of Stoughton.

† Teen Parent Program is a ministry conducted by Stoughton churches in conjunction with the Dane County Joining Forces for Families Service. FLC members prepare meals once every other month for teens and parents. For more information, call Pastor Sara Ehrets at 873-7761.
